Examination of the effect of Ali Shariati in Khomeini's religious and political discourses and examples from the press

This thesis was written by using press sources to examine whether Ali Shariati had an influence on Khomeini and to what extent. For this reason, the thesis has been handled by using the works of both people, mainly Turkish sources and then English and Persian sources. The study consists of three parts. The subject discussed in the first part tells about their lives and the political structer of the period in order to get to know Shariati and Khomeini. Considering the possible effect of the general situation of Iran on them during the years they lived, a brief overwiew of Iranian politics was deemed important. There are two issues in the second part of the thesis. The first topic is the most prominent religious and political discourses in Shariati's own books, compiled from conferences and lectures. At the same time, his articles published in Aydınlık Newspaper were also examined. The point of attention is to try to select the concepts that can be common with Khomeini. At the same time, discourses are limited to two bases as religious and political in order to make a clear comparison of the subject. The second half of the chapter is the main religious and political discourses in the books compiled from Khomeini's speeches and in his own books. Third part of the thesis is comparison of the discourses of Khomeini and Shariati. The aim is to reveal whether Ali Shariati has an effect on Khomeini, based on the used sources. Finally, in the period after the revolution, the realization of the Iranian situation which it idealized by the two characters, was evaluated through current data. At this stage, Khomeini's interview with The New York Times, six months after the revolution, was also used. Thus, it is analyzed to what extent the concepts that both Shariati and Khomeini emphasized and explained what should happen before carrying out the revolution are seen in practice. At the end of the study, it was revealed that Ali Shariati had a possible influence on Khomeini because considering the dates of the works, similarities of Shariati's discourses were encountered in Khomeini's later works.
