This study aims to provide a methodological framework for the identification and classification of fabricated hadiths by focusing on Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's (d. 751/1350) work al-Manār al-Munīf fī al-Ṣaḥīḥ wa al-Ḍaʿīf, which develops systematic rules for the textual criticism of hadiths. Ibn Qayyim's work is recognized as a pioneering source that enables text-based analysis without delving into complex disciplines such as isnād (chain of transmission) criticism. The study first examines the author's biography, scholarly identity, and relationship with his teacher Ibn Taymiyya within a sociopolitical context, establishing his independent intellectual stature. The historical origins of fabricated hadiths are analyzed in connection with early political crises (e.g., the martyrdom of Caliphs ʿUthmān and Ḥusayn), demonstrating how these events catalyzed hadith fabrication activities. The definition, historical evolution, and contributions of Islamic scholars to the science of textual criticism are emphasized, thereby refuting orientalist claims that "only isnād criticism was practiced." A methodological analysis of al-Manār al-Munīf reveals Ibn Qayyim's development of four categories of rules for textual criticism: 1) conceptual definitions, 2) explicit rules, 3) principles inferred implicitly, and 4) critiqued rules. This classification serves as a practical guide for distinguishing between authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) and weak (ḍaʿīf) hadiths. The study seeks to offer an accessible resource for non-specialist researchers and general readers, thereby contributing to the elimination of spurious narrations.
