Abstract (EN)

This thesis investigates the ideological dimensions of the Venice Architecture Biennale and examines how these political, cultural, and national frameworks have influenced architectural discourse. Taking a look at the curatorial decisions throughout history by comparing different editions of Biennale themes, one can see durations that reflect or perhaps respond to global and local socio-political realities. A particular focus is placed on how themes that emerge in the Turkish Pavilion's presence over time converge and/or diverge from other Biennale topics. Case studies on pavilions of certain countries, like Russia, Israel and Turkey show howhere architecture not only plays its role as political arm but also units it to form a medium for expressing ideology. Both exposes how national pavilions navigate thorny issues of self-made identities, tap into larger global narratives and feed the Biennale's perennial conversation on coexistence, culture identity & architectural progress in a rapidly shifting world. The study ultimately highlights the Biennale as a site of critique — one which helps to update architectural design in order to comment on current ideological discourses.
