The dilemma of freedom of expression and hate speech: Reading the queer theory within the dilemma of freedom of expression and hate discourse in Turkish media

İn this study aims to contribute with a new and mainly solution offering description like queer theory to the dilemma of freedom of expression and hate discourse. The representations of queer individuals in media texts were analysed using the discourse analysis method of Van Dijk. The effort to clarify the line between the freedom of expression and hate discourse based on queer theory narrative forms the aim and scope of this study. The universe of the study was made up of news, which document the freedom of expression and hate discourse dilemma in Turkish media between the months January and December in 2018. The news analysed were determined with the method of purposeful sampling. As a conclusion, when the representation of queer individuals in the media was evaluated in terms of the practices of the media regarding marginalization, it has been seen that the limits of the freedom of expression were mostly exceeded and that individuals were the targets of hate discourse. Within the scope of the study, in the news examined on the basis of the narrative of boundary and identities where queer theory was defined as taxonomical and definitional traps, it was found that queer individuals were transmitted with fixed or given identity categories.
