Tomato production economics in Igdir province

Tomato, which is in fresh vegetables group, is beneficial to human health. Also, it is employment opportunities and income source for farmers, and moreover, it has foreign exchange contribution to country's economy through export. Moreover, ıt is an important plant in terms of supporting industrialization of foodstuffs with its products such as tomato sauce, ketchup, etc. Turkey, fourth place in world tomato production, has a yield more than twice as much as the world average. It is aimed to determine amount of inputs used in tomato production, application time and unit product cost and to propose solution offers. For this purpose, 105 surveys, determined by simple random sampling, was conducted with farms. In the farms surveyed, the average age of respondents is 52 and 73,3% of them are primary school graduates, average (man work unit) EIB is 4,28 and average tomato planting area is 6,07 da. While producers make expense 2.507 TL for tomato production per 1 da, they obtained 5.454 kg/da of product with a value of 4.854 TL and net profit of 2.347 TL/da was obtained. The unit cost of tomato is 0,46 TL/kg, with a sales price of 0,89 TL/kg and a profit of 0,43 TL/kg. According to the linear regression analysis, the number of irrigation, the amount of fertilizer, the number of seedlings and the sowing area were significant in the tomato production, while the number of irrigation, the amount of fertilizer and the number of seedlings in the Regression Decision Tree model were found to be important factors. 70,5% of producers markets their products on the road and in the field. Significant problems of the tomato producer include not being able to combat diseases and harmfulness, high input prices and inadequate state support. Among the solution proposals are the establishment of product marketing cooperatives, the provision of adequate input support, and the training of training techniques.
