A bibliometric analysis of research on climate migration, climate citizenship and ecological citizenship

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research in the fields of climate migration, ecological citizenship, and climate citizenship, based on academic literature published between January 1, 2020, and August 15, 2025. The Web of Science (WoS) database was selected as the dataset due to its high reliability and widespread use in bibliometric analyses. Analyses were carried out using VOSviewer software, examining co-authorship, citation, bibliographic coupling, and keyword networks. The search yielded 591 publications in the field of climate migration, 254 in ecological citizenship, and 12 in climate citizenship. Climate migration analyses exhibited extensive and dense connections at the author, institution, and country levels, with central researchers including Chowdhury, Dada, Jung, McLeman, and Hoffmann. Countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and institutions like Wilfrid Laurier University, occupy central positions in the literature. Keyword analyses showed that the studies are concentrated around the concepts of climate change, climate migration, and climate displacement. Although the ecological citizenship literature is limited in number, it exhibits strong connections, with key authors identified as Seyfang, Sáiz, and Boxall. The United Kingdom and Canada are prominent countries in this field, and the conceptual focus is centered on ecological citizenship. The literature on climate citizenship is still developing, with central authors including Ogunbode, Bohm, and Vihersalo, and prominent countries and institutions being Finland, the United Kingdom, and the University of Lapland. Keyword and bibliographic coupling analyses indicate potential for interdisciplinary collaboration. Overall, the analysis of the three fields shows that, although the literature differs quantitatively, it forms conceptually interconnected structures, highlighting the importance of strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations and networks in the future.
