Abstract (EN)

This study aims to analyze the effects of additional customs duties on the Turkish economy, imports and exports, and the countries subject to additional customs duties for the period 2011 and 2020. During this period, a total of 64 chapters were subjected to taxation. Data on chapters subject to additional customs duties during the specified period are used for this analysis, with a particular focus on the year 2020. The findings of the study suggest that additional customs duties are not effective in reducing import volumes and protecting local producers. Furthermore, this policy increased production costs and lead to higher inflation. Therefore, the additional customs duties adversely affect local producers by causing them to lose their price competitiveness in international markets. The thesis is consist of three sections. First section presents a conceptual overview of international trade theories, protectionism in international trade, customs tariffs, non-tariff barriers and additional customs duties. The second section discusses Turkiye's foreign trade comprehensively and the effects of current global projects such as the One Belt and Road Initiative on the country's economy and foreign trade. The final section concludes with the analysis of the effects of additional customs duties on the Turkish economy.
