Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to understand the experiences, needs and paternal roles of first-time fathers in the transition to parenthood in Erbaa district of Tokat province. The sample of this qualitative study, which used a phenomenological design, consisted of 12 biological fathers whose babies were born in Erbaa State Hospital and were between 3-12 months old and living with their spouses. "Participant Introduction Form" and "Semi-Structured Interview Form" were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method with the MAXQDA program. From this study, 4 categories were obtained to understand the experiences and educational needs of first-time fathers. (1) "New Father's Perception of the Paternity Role", (2) "Difficulties Experienced Due to Being a New Father", (3) "Father-Baby Attachment and its Effects on the New Father", (4) "New Father' Needs and Suggestions". This study has shown that fathers, have discovered their provider role during pragnancy and their caregiving role during labor and postpartum and are willing to participate in the process. However, fathers need guidance, recognition and evolvement from healthcare professionals in all of these processes. Fathers should be supported to develop and practice baby-care skills.
