Abstract (EN)
This study is indented to evaluate the capability and the effectiveness of the Foreign Language Curriculum in secondary schools and to measure the parallelism between theory and practice. Thus, it is aimed to shed light on how much the new curriculum corresponds the expectations. In this study; the goals of the Foreign Language Curriculum used in the secondary schools, implementation of the curriculum model, its development in our country, the growing need of learning a foreign language and the necessity to evaluate this curriculum are dealt with.By surveying the opinions of Foreign Language teachers, the planning and the application steps of the curriculum are aimed to be put forward in various dimensions. The data are reported with their interpretations. In this study, source research and qualitative research methods are used. The data that contribute to the study are obtained from the opinions of the research group among the foreign language teachers who work in 9 of secondary schools in Adapazarı. Research group consists of 10 foreign language teachers who work in secondary schools in 2007-2008 educational year. 30 questions which were formerly determined were asked to the teachers in research group. During the survey, in order to deal with the conditions that the teachers handle at work, their suggestions, thoughts and opinions were considered in detail and the conversations were recorded. It is observed that the lack of branch teachers and the classrooms that are available for language classes at schools, the inadequacy of supporting materials such as flashcards, OHPs or CDs and the classrooms? being overcrowded have caused problems in language teaching. It is also noticed that the academic education that the teachers receive at school seems to be adequate in theory, but in practice it seems inadequate. Another problem which has discouraged foreign language education is seen as the lack of conscious of the school administrators, the students and their families towards the need of learning a language. The new education system is now a considerable improvement on foreign language teaching since it requires the students have to answer the questions of foreign language in order to get better points to be able to attend better high schools. Consequently, the demand for learning a foreign language increases. As constructivist approach is taken over, the change in the teaching activities that direct students to research and practice is observed. This situation is evaluated as a positive development. It is concluded that, in order to realize Foreign Language teaching in secondary schools in expected quality, current situations should be revised. Applicability level of the Foreign Language Curriculum should be increased in order to prevent negative consequences in language teaching in secondary schools.
