Examination of pre-service mathematics teachers' drawing skills of some geometric shapes

In order for students to be able to perform geometry more efficiently, they need to make geometric drawings successfully so that they can increase their geometric thinking level. Students can create different geometric drawings step by step by using various tools such as compass, ruler and protractor. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the pre-service teachers' ability to draw polygons, whether they could use the conceptual structure of polygons and their features during drawing, the conceptual mistakes they made in the drawings, and whether the drawings they made using a ruler and protractor provided the given dimensions. The data used in this research were obtained through a data collection form that included open-ended questions that required drawing of six two-dimensional geometric concepts and applied to 80 pre-service teachers studying in the first year of the İbrahim Çeçen University, elementary school mathematics education undergraduate program in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. Qualitative research method was used in this study. The data obtained in the research is limited to the teaching content of the second year primary school mathematics teaching students' drawing skills related to geometric concepts. It can be defined that pre-service teachers do not know enough about the features of diagonal, edge and height concepts and they have problems in these concepts. It can be defined that pre-service teachers have difficulty in drawing shapes with the desired features without giving any drawings. Although prototype shapes are given, it can be said that the desired drawings were not successful at the point of completing these shapes. Important problems have arisen in terms of the given and desired features in the drawing of the figures.
