Parental involvement in the elementary schools: Scale adaptation

The objective of this study is to adapt the subscales for parents and students of the Scale for School and Family Involvement in Elementary Schools, which has been developed by Sheldon and Epstein (2007) as well as the subscale for teacher of the Scale for School and Family Involvement in Elementary Schools, which has been developed by Epstein and Salinas (1993). The study group consists of 353 teachers, 319 parents and 382 students in the elementary schools in the cities of Düzce and Kastamonu.The level of reliability in the scales adapted into Turkish has been determined by calculating the Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient. The structural validity of the scales has been determined using the confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability level of the entire scale for teachers was found to be .89, while the reliability levels of nine dimensions of the scale was ranging between .67 and .91. The reliability level of the entire scale for parents was found to be .95; however, the reliability levels of six dimensions of the scale were ranging between .73 and .93. The reliability level of the entire scale for students was found to be .93. This scale has three dimensions and their reliability levels were calculated between .78 and .91. The ratio (?2 /sd) of chi-square (?2), calculated for the validity of the scale for teachers, to the degree of freedom (sd) is 2.1. Of the goodness of fit index calculated by the confirmatory factor analysis, the RMSEA value was found as .06, the SRMR value as 0.72 and the CFI value as .89. The ?2 /sd ratio of the scale for parents is 2.023. The RMSEA value was found to be .059, the SRMR value to be .060 and the CFI value to be .95. The ?2 /sd ratio of the scale for students was found as 2.9. The RMSEA value was found to be .071, the SRMR value to be .066 and the CFI value to be .95. It has been concluded that the scales are suitable for use in Turkey, in accordance with the results as provided above.
