The investigation of the perceptions of actual and preferred classroom atmospheres of secondary school students? and teachers? according to some variables.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of actual and preferred classroom atmosphere of secondary school students, the relationships of these perceptions with gender, class and schools? socio-economic status (SES); the perceptions of actual and preferred classroom atmosphere of secondary school teachers, the relationships of these perceptions with gender, branch and lenght of service.The population of this study consisted of 6th, 7th and 8th grades primary school students and teachers of Turkish and English classes in central district of Tokat province. Chosen with stratified sampling method, 1799 students and their 84 teachers participated in this study. Data were collected by using ?Elementary and Middle School Inventory of Classroom Environment.? The data were analyzed by means of t-test and Anova values calculated on the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).At the end of the study significant differences were found between students? actual and preferred classroom environments, girls? and boys? actual and preferred classroom atmospheres, 6th, 7th and 8th classes? actual and preferred classroom atmospheres, lower, middle and higher socio-economic status? actual and preferred classroom atmospheres.Significant differences were found between teachers? actual and preferred classroom atmospheres, teachers? actual classroom atmospheres on involvment sub-scale of lenght of service variable. However no difference was found between teachers? actual and preferred classroom atmospheres on the variable of gender and branch.Also significant differences were found between perceptions of teachers? and students? classroom atmospheres.
