The problem of language and its signification in Imam Mâturidi's thought

The recorded usul al-fiqh works written by Imam Mâturîdî have not survived until today. However, his commentary, Ta'wîlâtu'l-Quran, which contains rich material on different disciplines, is a very important source in terms of usul al-fiqh. The concepts used by Imam Mâturîdî in his work and the issues he discusses are qualified to provide important data on the origin and sources of the usul al-fiqh. In this regard, three of the usul al-fiqh issues that Imam Mâturîdî deals with, who lived in the formation period of the usul al-fiqh; the theory of bayan, the authority of the language of the holy texts in expressing God's will, and his views on the signification of words will be examined in this study. It is of great importance to reveal his views on the authority of language and its signification, to determine the basic features, active groups and discussions of the early Hanafi usul al-fiqh thought that developed in Transoxiana, and to show how the connection between the decrees and the texts was established in this period.
