Kemālpas̲hazādah's concepti̇on of conti̇gency wi̇thi̇n the treati̇ses of conti̇gency

The concept of Contingency was transmitted to the Islamic world with the translations of the works by Aristotle where later this concept ameliorated and used in the tradition of Kalam and the Ibn Sina's philosophy with various approaches. The concept of contingency subsequently become a principal concept of metaphysics by Ibn Sina, progressively have been dealt in different ways by Al-Ghazali and Fakhruddin ar-Razi. Next, Nasiruddin et-Tusi and Adududdin ed-Ici took the initiative by transferring it to the Ottoman thought through commentaries and annotations of the original texts. Kemālpas̲hazādah, one of the most influential thinker in the Ottoman empire, wrote four treatise on contigency which are Risālah fī al-eys ve al-leys, Risālah fī enne'l-mumkin lā yekûn ehad tarafeyhi evlā bih lizātih, Risālah fī al-fakr and Risālah fī tahkīk luzūm al-imkān li al-mumkin. Kemālpas̲hazādah inherited the scientific experience from his predecessors, analyzed the concept of contingency for that period in details and at the same time constructed his own ideas in some of his works. This thesis aims to identify Kemālpas̲hazādah's ideas on the concept of contingency based on the aforementioned treatises. The first chapter of the thesis deal with the development of the concept of contingency until the arrival of Ibn Sina and problems elucidated by Ibn Sina in regards to this concept. The second chapter of the thesis will discuss on the general literature reviews on the concept of contingency by later scholars post Ibn Sina such as al-Ghazali, Fahreddîn er-Râzî, Nasîruddîn et-Tûsî and Adudüddin el-Îcî. In the third chapter, four treatises of Kemālpas̲hazādah on the concept of contingency will be evaluated. Lastly, a general evaluation will be produced based on Kemālpas̲hazādah's concept of contingency.
