Abstract (EN)

In our study, it was planned to evaluate the rates of treatment methods in these two subgroups in patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as well as the presence and severity of depression in the treatment preparations used, thus aiming to investigate the effect of the treatment on mood. Our study included 81 (18-67 years old) (F:45 M:36) patients who were diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) by endoscopy and histopathology and who applied to the Gastroenterology outpatient clinic of Adıyaman University Faculty of Medicine Practice and Research Hospital between September 2023 and January 2024 were taken. 51 of them were UC and 30 were CH. While the participants of the study were answering the surveys, the questions that they could not understand were explained clearly and in detail, so that they could give the most appropriate answer to the questions. Patients with psychiatric illnesses or lack of cooperation, pregnant women and those who did not want to participate in the study were not included in the study. All patients were questioned about their disease duration, comorbidities, medications used, place of residence, date of birth, marital status, family history, and occupation. Patients were categorized according to the type of drug preparations they used. It was planned to use the "Beck Depression Scale" to determine the depression status of the patients. Descriptive statistical methods were used to evaluate the data and the questions were open to the patients. An independent sample t test was used to compare quantitative continuous data between two independent groups. The relationship between grouped variables was tested using the chi-square test. In the study, a p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. We included 81 patients in our study. While 51 (63%) of these patients had ulcerative colitis, 30 (37%) had Crohn's disease. Of all the patients, 45 (55.6%) were female and 36 (44.4%) were male. 54 of all patients (66.7%) were receiving oral treatment, while 27 (33.3%) were receiving parenteral treatment. Independent samples t test was used to compare the Beck Depression Inventory scores of the patients according to the type of treatment they received, disease type and gender. p<0.05 was accepted as statistical significance value. Accordingly, although the BDI score was higher in patients receiving parenteral treatment than in patients receiving oral treatment, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.284). Pearson chi-square analysis was used to compare the severity of depression according to the Beck Depression Inventory scores of the patients according to the type of treatment received, disease type and gender. p<0.05 was accepted as statistical significance value. Accordingly, although moderate and mild depression was more common in those receiving parenteral treatment than in those receiving oral treatment, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.519). In patients diagnosed with UC and CD, which are two subgroups of inflammatory bowel diseases, no significant difference was found in the type of treatment and preparation in creating a depressive mood in the cases.
