The point of view of the English Sir William Muir to Omar's peri̇od

XIX century is an important period for orientalist studies. Orientalism was systemized due to this period. The West's eager of superiority over the East has accelerated by the help of scientific studies. As a result of all these, the studies on Islam also went through a different dimension. This study has been investigating the point of view of Sir William Muir who is an orientalist of XIX century and the works of him such as "Annals of yhe Early Caliphate" and "The Caliphate: Its Rise, Decline and Fall" and their approach towards the period of Omar. Muir has done a detailed research regarded to Islamic History by starting from Mohammed and including Abbsids. Espically, the point that comes out in these studies is that it has benefited from the sources of Islamic History. In these studies of Muir, the evaluations on the point of Omar is pretty important in terms of finding out the point of view of the orientalist ideas toward Islamic religion. Omar period which helped Islamic period to improve even beter owing to his conquest movements took attention of Muir; as it did the other orientalists. Interesting evaluations were made by Muir about Omar's conquest movements political relations during the caliphate period; however, they were either either positive or negative. Some of the assessments that Muir, made an Omar period are important in terms of revealing the perspective of orientalist thought to Islamic religion. In order to be able to make a clearer interpretations of Sir William Muir's orientalist point of view, a brief introduction to orientalism and consepts and a brief history of the reasons for emergence of orientalism has been discussed in this study. The conquest happened of the period Omar and his ideas on political issues has been put forward. Besides, his evalvating Omar period was contextualized in administrative, economical, scientifical and cultural ways. Key Words : Orientalist,Muir, Caliphate, Omar, Conquest, Islam
