Discussions on the process of textualization of the Qur'an in British orientalism

Abstract (EN)

The process of textualization of the Qur'an has been the subject matter of many researhes both in Islamic World and in the West. The existence of controversial narrations about this process has also attracted the attention of British Orieantalists and many views have been put forward in this regard. The aim of the research is to compare three British Orientalists' ideas to reveal how they approach the process of textualization of the Qur'an. In the thesis, claims are explained by induction method, examined by text analysis method and a descriptive way is followed. The thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, Muir's claims about the textualization of the Qur'an together with his approach to revelation, and the methods he applied to reach his conclusions are mentioned. In the second part of the study, revisionist Burton's claims and methods regarding the process of textualization of the Qur'an, in particular the Qur'an-Mushaf distinction are discussed. In the third part, Rippin, a revisionist who differs from Burton with many ideas, is examined in terms of his approach to the process of textualization of the Qur'an and the methods he applied.
