The effect of authentic short videos on vocabulary learning in English teaching

This study aimed to investigate the effects of integrating authentic short video content into lesson materials for teaching English vocabulary. A sequential explanatory mixed design was used in the research. An achievement test was developed for the vocabulary related to the 9th theme of the 9th grade English course, "Celebrations and Invitations," and used as a measurement tool for the application to be conducted within the scope of the thesis. In the context of the research topic, while the experimental group covered the theme objectives with activities, short subtitled authentic videos were also used in the pre stages for different skills related to the vocabulary. In the control group, the lessons continued to be taught using the methods and activities existing in the book content required by the objectives. The impact of integrating authentic short videos into course content has been investigated in the experimental group to see if it affects success. Additionally, through a semi-structured interview form created and the students' views on vocabulary learning with authentic content were revealed. By analyzing the pre-test and post-test results between the experimental and control groups, it was determined that the use of authentic materials led to an increase in vocabulary learning achievement in favor of the experimental group. After the thematic analysis of the semi-structured interview questions, it was revealed that the students' views on authentic content were positive, as they associated them with real-life situations and had positive feelings on them.
