Exploring the motivation and challenges of Albanian students in the higher education process in the UK and Turkey

Globalization is leading many young people to pursue higher quality higher education abroad. Albanian youth are also influenced by this global phenomenon and are leaving their countries to seek education abroad due to various push-pull factors. While existing research has explored student mobility, there remains a notable gap in studies examining the motivations and experiences of Albanian students specifically. Moreover, comparative analyses of their experiences across different host countries remain scarce. This study addresses this gap by investigating the motivations, challenges and post-graduation plans of Albanian students in England and Turkey. Using a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 Albanian students in Turkey and 19 in England. Findings of this research indicate that participants sought opportunities abroad primarily for better education and improved living standards. During their academic journeys, they faced various challenges, including adaptation difficulties and, in some cases, cultural shock. Despite these obstacles, most achieved successful adaptation and personal growth. However, their experiences, combined with persistent political and socio-economic conditions in Albania, have led many to favor remaining abroad after graduation rather than returning home. This situation contributes to Albania`s ongoing brain drain, where qualified human sources are forced out of the country.
