Human security and terrorism

Security is one of the main concepts of the international relations discipline. However, no agreed definition has been made on what the concept security means. Human Security Approach places the human person and human dignity in the centre of all considerations. Human security concept institutionalised by 1994 Human Development Report of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and took form around freedom from fear, freedom from want and freedom to live in dignity. Report listed seven separate components of human security: economic security (assured basic income), food security (physical and economic access to food), health security (freedom from disease and infection), environmental security (access to sanitary water supply, clean air and a non-degraded land system), personal security (security from physical violence and threats), community security (security of cultural identity), and political security (protection of basic human rights and freedoms). Terrorism is a threat directed primarily against civilians, accordingly human security. Terrorism by nature is difficult to define. The word "terrorism" is laden with emotional, cultural and political associations which make it unquestionably difficult to define. The adage of, "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." is still alive today. Terrorism uses the violence to get their political points. Even though terrorism may be thought same as anarchism, both are well different concepts. While anarchism is an ideology, terrorism has no ideology. Ideology is only one of the elements of terrorism. 9/11 terrorist attacks against USA have turned a new page on terrorism and its history.
