Political economy of internet: A review of European Union and Turkey

2000s have been the beginning of many developments and changes in both economic and social life with developments in the internet, information technologies and globalization. In the light of these developments, an economic transformation started with the development of information technologies. Economic and strategic importance of internet has increased. The concept of "new economy" is one of the approaches that emerged within this framework. The new economy is the field of study that examines the economic impacts of developments in information technologies. Internet economy is also examined under "new economy" concept. With the rapidly increasing number of internet users in all parts of the world, the internet economy has started to gain importance. Internet economy consists of all economic, political and social activities supported by the internet and related information and communication technologies. It is important to understand the concept of information society under the title of political economy of Internet. The Internet, which is considered a revolution in all over the world, has enabled the globalization of not only the economy, but also the cultural and social spheres. Electronic commerce (E-commerce), the driving force of the economy in the digital World, has emerged as a powerful part of the internet economy. Considered as a new way of business management, e-commerce is the most important elements of today's economies along with the internet. The increase in the use of e-commerce has enabled the internet economy to gain a significant role in the world economy. This study will examine social and economic policies as part of the internet economy and development of e-commerce for both European Union and Turkey.
