Abstract (EN)

Pollen, collected by bees from flowering plants by mixing with nectar and bee secretions is a natural bee product which rich in phytochemicals. This natural product contains compounds such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, carotenoids and polyphenols. The pollen composition differs depending on the climate and geographical characteristics of the area in which it is collected. Since ancient times, mankind has been used in the treatment of many diseases such as pollen colds, ulcers and anemia, and it is known that the antioxidant properties of this product originate from the flavonoids in the contents. As a result of the investigations, erythrocytes were selected as model cells for easy and acute oxidative damage studies. Tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) is an organic peroxide that causes oxidative damage in human erythrocyte cells. The erythrocyte cells were isolated from the blood obtained by the ethical committee approval from health individuals. The obtained erythrocyte package was divided into four groups as control, aqueous Turkish pollen extract, positive control and negative control group. Red blood cell package was made first extraction treatment and then t-BHP treatment which will occur in the negative control with damage to aqueous of Turkish pollen extracts protective effects of lipid peroxidation of the final product as malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) enzyme activities. There was a statistically significant difference in the aqueous of Turkish pollen extract group and the negative control (p <0.05). As a result, it has been stated for the first time that aqueous Turkish pollen extract may have protective effect against t-BHP induced oxidative damage in human erythrocyte cells in vitro. The obtained data is the pioneer of various in vitro and in vivo studies. It is envisaged that pollen will be used as an alternative food supplement without this work.
