The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of ?job descriptive index? and to define, job satisfaction of specialist physicians working in İzmir State Hospitals. For this purpose, a data collection form that identifies demographic characteristics and consists of 19 questions and a job satisfaction measure that is organized as 45 items have been implemented, interviewing face to face, on 175 specialists who are selected from 4 state hospitals situated in the metropolitan districts of Izmir city. The test has been repeated with the same specialists after 2 to 6 weeks. Research specialist in 1266 constituted the universe. Sample size is 175. The type of this study is methodological and cross-sectional. The job satisfaction index developed by Smith, Kendal and Hulin in 1969 has been expanded in our study. In order to evaluate the job satisfaction, job satisfaction and the elements that affect the job satisfaction according to independent variables of 175 doctors (age, sex, marital status, area of expertise, institution worked in, duration of office, shape of work, working conditions, the period spent for the occupation, additional duties, occupational interest and spare time) have been analyzed. According to the result of our study; all of the factors and the job satisfaction point averages of the male doctors in total have been found out to be higher when compared to women doctors. Job satisfaction has been observed to mount up parallel to increase in age; whereas, no significant statistical differences have been found between job satisfaction variables in relation to marital status and area of expertise. The doctors who participate in occupational seminars, congresses and meetings; who act as managers and spare time for their hobbies have been observed to have higher job satisfaction point averages and factors in total.Key Words: Job satisfaction, development of index, validity, reliability.
