İskilipli Abdülkâdir bin İsmail's commentary on Qasida-i Bürde (Review-text-index)

The tradition of commentary (serh) in Turkish literature began in the XVth century and became classical in the XVIth century, especially with commentaries on Arabic and Persian works. In the XVII-XIXth centuries, a large number of commentaries were accumulated in fields such as linguistics, hadith, fiqh, medicine, astrology, literature and law. Among the most commented works in Arabic are the odes of Kâ'b b. Zuhayr (24/645?), the most important poet of his time, and al-Būsīrī (695/1296?), who lived about seven centuries after him. These odes, which Kâ'b wrote hoping to be spared by the Prophet and Būsīrī hoping to recover from his paralysis, became famous under the common name of Kasīda-i Bürde due to some similarities in their stories. For these two odes, which attracted a great deal of attention in Turkish literature, commentaries, translations, tahmis... were written for centuries. Abdülkâdir b. İsmail of Iskilip also wrote a prose commentary on Bûsîrî's qasida. This commentary, written in the nineteenth century, can be found in the Berlin State Library, Hs. Or. 4572 in the Berlin State Library and it consists of 117 pages. In the first part of this study, a brief overview of Kâ'b b. Zuhayr's life and qasida is given, detailed information about Būsīrī's life and qasida is given, and the literature on Būsīrī's qasida in Turkish literature is identified. In the second chapter, the life and scholarly personality of 'Abd al-Qādir b. Ismail is emphasized and the commentary is analyzed. In the third part, the transcribed text of the work is given. With this work, a voluminous work has been added to the commentary literature of Qasīda al-Burda, and thanks to this commentary, the existence of a commentator has been known and his work has been brought to light.
