Abstract (EN)

Textile arts, one of the means of expression in contemporary art, could be integrated with two or three-dimensional works, as well as technological approaches such as video art and video installations, and connect with human history through the texture of textiles. The review of embroidery, a traditional handicraft, in various cultures would reveal that samples of this art could be found in various resources, museums and collections and reflect an admirable technical knowledge, color diversity and composition features. Embroidery, a privileged traditional textile handcraft, is still a vital traditional and industrial art. Furthermore, it was observed that it has acquired the status of a significant means of expression among contemporary textile arts. It was determined that embroidery artists interpreted artistic expressions, emotions and ideas through unique embroidery art. Thus, it was concluded that the significance of embroidery in contemporary textile art should be investigated. In the search conducted on the Council of Higher Education (YOK) database, it was determined that there were previous theses on the traditional dimension of embroidery or other fields of art; however, the significance of embroidery in contemporary textile art was never scrutinized. The present paper is significant since the significance of embroidery, a planar textile technique that plays a key role in traditional culture, in contemporary textile arts was determined based on the direct views of the artists collected with a questionnaire. The research on the significance of embroidery in contemporary textile arts conducted in the current thesis and the views of the embroidery artists demonstrated that embroidery artwork are created in both traditional formats and with innovative approaches in various domains. Keywords: Contemporary textile arts, Traditional embroidery, Embroidery technique, Hand embroidery.
