Potential contributions of institutional history studies to understanding the history of businesses: Analysis of the History Studies of 50 Yıl Dünden Bugüne Türk Hava Yolları (1933-1983) and 75. Yılında Türk Hava Yolları (1933-2008)

This thesis has two main objectives. First, 50 Yıl Dünden Bugüne Türk Hava Yolları: 1933-1983 and 75. Yılında Türk Hava Yolları 1933-2008, by examining the historical development of Turkish Airlines Inc. within the framework of the historical events mentioned in the works. In this historical development, it will be evaluated which important events are specified in the life of the business in the works. Thus, the general historical process of Turkish Airlines Inc. in terms of growth and survival will be evaluated. As the second purpose, it is aimed to reveal the determination of the evaluations in the work that are thought to be important in terms of business history in Turkey. With these two purposes, it will be possible to discuss what contributions institution history studies will contribute to understanding the history of enterprises. When the business history literature in Turkey is examined, it is seen that there is no communication with the history of this institution. Especially, it is seen that the institution history studies in Turkey, examples of which are presented above, can have potential contributions to our understanding of the history of enterprises in Turkey, not discussed in the literature. This thesis study is to make this discussion which has not been done before in the history of business in Turkey. Document analysis method was used in the study. In the research, 50 Yıl Dünden Bugüne Türk Hava Yolları: 1933-1983 and 75. Yılında Türk Hava Yolları 1933-2003 were examined. While examining these works in accordance with the aims of the research, two main issues were emphasized. The first is to try to create a model for the growth and survival of the business on the basis of the establishment and development of Turkish Airlines Inc. in the works. In this context, it will be tried to determine the basic parameters related to establishment and development in the works. Thus, it will be evaluated whether an institutional history study can present a basic model for the growth and development of enterprises. The second main subject of the research is to determine what basic information is stated in the work of Turkish Airlines, both about itself in terms of business administration and the context of Turkey. In this context, events related to business administration (for example, the partnership of the first foreign partner to Turkish Airlines) and events related to business administration in the context of Turkey (for example, the reflection of the change of political economy in Turkey to Turkish Airlines) separately determined and evaluated. The pervasive impact of the study is based on its academic impact. Although there are many institution history studies in Turkey, it has not been discussed what kind of potential contributions these institution history studies have in our understanding of the history of enterprises. This thesis reveal the potentials of institutional history studies that can be used as a resource in business history research by making this discussion.
