Ulûm al-Qur'ân in İsmail Turan's commentary called Wujûh al-Ta'wîl fî Asrâr al-Tanzîl

This study centers on the tafsīr Wujūḥ al-Taʾwīl fī Asrār al-Tanzīl by Ismāʿīl Turān, and examines its position and contributions within the discipline of Qurʾānic studies (ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān). Turān, a Turkish-born senior engineer, authored one of the most comprehensive tafsīrs in a modern context in Arabic, thereby bridging classical and contemporary exegetical literatures and positioning him as an exceptional exegete in the field. Influenced by his engineering background, he occasionally develops scientific and technical readings in his exegesis, and he offers original insights, particularly in topics related to scientific exegesis. Of particular note is his treatment of naskh (abrogation), where he moves beyond classical categorizations by proposing new conceptual distinctions such as takhfîfât (alleviations) and tashdîdât (intensifications). Furthermore, his approach to Qur'anic repetition transcends traditional understandings, reframing it through the dual concepts of taʿaddud (multiplicity) and tafannun (variety). This interpretive framework offers a novel semantic and structural reading of repetition in the Qur'an. This study assesses Wujūh al-Taʾwīl fī Esrāri't-Tenzīl as a work that reinterprets the classical tafsīr heritage, attends to contemporary contexts, and proposes conceptual innovations. The exegete, who follows the strands of Rivāyah-Dirāyah and Muqāren (rival or comparative) approaches in his commentary, blends these methodologies with his own cognitive accumulation to present an original stance. Turān's interpretations introduce a critical depth to the traditional understanding of tafsīr and open new avenues for Ulūm al-Qurʾān scholarship.
