Abstract (EN)

The concept of Urban Renewal started coming to the agenda in Turkey after 1980 with widely transformation of the slum neighborhoods together with the renovation of the poor neighborhoods near the city center. This study focused on one of the oldest residential areas of İstanbul which is Derbent Quarter, located on the Büyükdere-Maslak axis where it has faced urban transformation earlier, compared with other poor neighborhoods. In general, the negative and positive effects of the urban transformation phenomenon on the inhabitants of Derbent neighborhood were emphasized. Firstly in this study, the approaches and discussions about global capitalism transforming urban spaces were discussed. Postmodern design of the cities, concept of production of space and the urban transformation concept are examined within its historical development, application methods and models are given. The dicussion of urban transformation concept was analyzed by comparing the culture of neighborhood and the concept of gated community. In this context, the culture of neighborhood on the basis of its social relations are defined by the example of the Derbent neighborhood. With the information given about the neighborhood's process of establishment and struggle with transformation, a research method was designed in order to reveal the spatial changes and social disintegration in the neighborhood and to measure the impact of urban segregation on the people of Derbent. The process and effects of the spatial change and social disintegration which is emerged within the context of urban transformation were discussed with the findings and the interpretations of the research.
