The investigation of the effects of use of technological devices on health in adolescents in İstanbul

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship of technological devices (mobile phone, computer, television, tablet, game console) use with different health parameters in adolescents. In this study, a total of 1147 students (572 middle school, 575 high school students) who were educated in Bahçelievler district of Istanbul were taken randomly. The questionnaire was prepared by the researcher in the light of the current literature review and the status of technological device ownership, duration of use, health-related parameters and socio-demographic characteristics were evaluated by self-response under observation. There was a statistically significant relationship between mobile phone, computer, television and daily total technological device usage times and musculoskeletal disorders (p<0,05). There was a statistically significant relationship between technological devices usage times and fatigue, social behaviors, psychological symptoms and dietary irregularities (p<0,05). There was a statistically significant difference between mobile phone, television, computer and game console usage times and the frequency of different eye health problems (p<0,05). There was a statistically significant difference between the presence of mobile phones in the students' rooms and the frequency of sleep duration, eye health problem, distractibility and activity problems related to the course (p<0,05). There was a statistically significant difference between mobile phone and tablet usage times and the frequency of headache (p<0,05). Mobile phone, tablet and television usage times and sleep duration were different between groups (p<0,05). There was a significant difference between mobile phone and television usage times and sleep onset latency time (p<0,05). According to the result of our study, it was observed that the increasing technological devices use and the presence of technological devices in adolescent's room were related to different health related problems.
