Socio-economic structure of non-Muslims in Istanbul (1740-1789)

This study focuses on the socio-economic situation of the non-Muslims in Istanbul in the second half of the 18th century. Their populations, places they live, professions, the problems they face and the situation of their places of worship are discussed. In this context, the prohibitions they faced in the second half of the 18th century are mentioned. It was examined whether these prohibitions were applied only to them and whether they obtained exemption. In addition, it was discussed whether they faced social or personal pressure and violence. As a matter of fact, non-Muslim Greek, Armenian and Jewish people, who have been living in many different parts of the city for a long time, have become the important factors in the region where they live or work. In this context, when it is desired to obtain information about the socio-economic life of Istanbul in the relevant period, the non-Muslim subjects of the city must also be understood.
