Gulshaniyya lodges in Istanbul: Determining the current situation and publishing a new list

Gulshaniyya, one of the branches of the Khalwatiyya order, founded by Ibrahim Gulshani in Cairo, Egypt, has spread throughout history and opened lodges in many provinces and regions such as Aleppo, Damascus, Alexandria, Mecca, Diyarbakır, Urfa, Antalya, Istanbul and Edirne, and is an important order in terms of our cultural history. The Gulshanism Istanbul process began with some developments around Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566), Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha (1523-1536) and Ibrahim Gulshani (d. 940/1534). The first Gulshaniyya lodges of the city were established in the 15th century under the leadership of Hasan Zarîfî Efendi (d. 977/1569), who was appointed as caliph by the founder and sage of the order, İbrahim Gulshani. Gulshaniyya, where many poets and composers were educated, could not show its prevalence in Istanbul as it did in many parts of Anatolia between the 15th and 18th centuries, and soon lost its influence and became history. This study aims to gather the historical process of the Gulshaniyya order in Istanbul between the 15th and 18th centuries, to identify its lodges from sources, to list them, and to map their distribution in the province. In general, it is seen in the sources that the total number of Gulshani lodges in Istanbul is 12. However, with this study, the total number of lodges serving the Gulshani order in Istanbul has increased to 24.
