The frequency of fecal incontinence and related factors in pregnancy in the city of Istanbul

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to contribute to the establishment of the database of prevention / precaution, treatment and care by determining the frequency and risk factors of fecal incontinence, which is a neglected subject by the health care team during pregnancy period. This is a prevalence and risk identification study to represent the pregnant women living in the city of Istanbul. 1140 pregnant were chosen as sample. 5.4% (n=62) of the pregnant expressed presence of emotional / psychosocial changes due to incontinence problems. Involuntary or accidental defecation was present in 0,7% (n=8) of pregnant. Social life problems due to fecal incontinence was present in 11.1% (n=127) of pregnant. Total Score of "Wexner Continence Assessment Scale" of "less than 5 points" was found in 88.2% (n = 1.005) and total score of "5 points and over" in 1.8% (n = 135). Previous parity, vaginal delivery, intervention story during delivery, presence of hemorrhoids or anal fissures, low socioeconomic levels were found to increase the likelihood of having fecal (anal) incontinence regarding this study. The incidence of fecal incontinence was found to be increased 30,511 times by hemorrhoid / anal fissure presence, 1,847 times by weight gain over 13kg during pregnancy. The incidence of fecal incontinence was found to be decreased 0,464 times by low grade education and 0,142 times by urinary incontinence presence in our study.
