A study on the tradition of religious music in Istanbul selatin mosques during Ramadan

Turkish music, which dates back centuries, is divided into two as instrumental and vocal music. Religious music, which is another sub-title of vocal music, has gained integrity and tradition with the Islamic religion for centuries. Religious music is usually performed on special occasions, in mosques, tekkes (islamic monastery) and various religious communities. Ramadan is a very important and valuable month for Muslims. In Islam, there is the month of Ramadan, which is accepted as the sultan of eleven months, and the Night of Qadr, which is better than a thousand months in Ramadan. The Quran was revealed on the night of Qadr in Ramadan. Istanbul has been home to many empires throughout its history. What makes Istanbul so important is its geographical and spiritual location, which is important for many religions. Istanbul is a city that can be shown as a source in terms of the formation and development of religious music. During Ramadan, the verses of the Qur'an, the mawlid-i sharif (birth of prophet Mohammad), ghazals, qasida and hymns recited in Istanbul's selatin mosques are performed with a certain makam and method. In this study, the titles of Turkish music and religious music are included. The maqams, methods and forms used in religious music are defined. Information about the religious music tradition in five selatin mosques, which constitute the limitations of the thesis, has been tried to be given. The conceptual framework of the thesis includes the history of mosques, the practices in mosques, the works recited in mosques, the notes, maqams, procedures, forms of the works recited, and interviews with muezzins (caller for prayer). In this direction, it is expected that the study will give direction to other studies to be carried out in the field of religious music and constitute a source.
