Abstract (EN)

Intensive construction and urbanization, which occurred with the rapid population increase in the cities, caused the green areas in the city to decrease. This has increased the efforts to reach sustainable cities. Vertical gardens have an important place in the studies carried out to date. Within the scope of the research, it is aimed to develop suggestions that will contribute to sustainability by evaluating the functions of vertical gardens in terms of ecology, economy, social and aesthetics. Firstly, literature scans related to the subject were made and vertical garden samples applied in İstanbul were examined. It has been applied worldwide and evaluations have been made by considering different examples. In this context, the characteristics of vertical gardens applied were determined and their contributions to the city in the context of sustainability were revealed. In addition, surveys and deep interviews were applied to experts and users. It is aimed to direct the studies to achieve sustainability in vertical gardens with the deep interview study applied to the experts, and to take the opinions of the users about the sample studies and to evaluate the visual landscape preferences. It was selected as the research area of Istanbul Province. After defining the natural and cultural landscape features of the research area, vertical gardens were examined under three headings according to their location. Then, the method of the research is explained. These; data collection, evaluation and analysis of data and presentation of results and suggestions. While collecting the data, on-site observations, photographs, notes, survey studies and face to face interviews were used. In the evaluation of the data, questionnaire study and deep interview study were used. A survey was conducted with 96 people in Fatih District of Istanbul. Questionnaire forms are given in ANNEX-1 and ANNEX-2. The data obtained were analyzed with SPSS-24 program. As a result of the research, the results of the survey and deep interview studies were taken into consideration. Along with the obtained results, vertical garden samples applied in Istanbul were compared with the overseas samples. Suggestions for its development have been presented. As a result; In order for vertical gardens to become sustainable designs, it has been determined that the ecological aspect should be emphasized. Sustainable practices worldwide should be taken as an example. Vertical gardens, which contribute to sustainable landscape designs, are expected to grow in the coming years.
