The study of nanotechnology involves both understanding the materials as well as controlling the processing conditions of these materials at the nanoscale. In the class of nanostructures, semiconducting nanowires are of high interest because of their extraordinary properties and promising applications. The uniqueness mainly arises from the surface-to-volume ratio being higher than that of most nanostructures. Of all semiconducting materials, zinc oxide exhibits a large excitation binding energy and wide bandgap, making it highly desirable to be used for transistors, photodetectors, and multipurpose piezoelectric nanogenerators. Vertically aligned zinc oxide nanowires can be synthesized using a variety of techniques, the hydrothermal growth method being one of the easiest and most affordable and low operating synthesis techniques. In this thesis, vertically aligned zinc oxide nanowires are synthesized onto indium tin oxide coated PET and glass substrates via the hydrothermal growth technique. The growth conditions were optimized with parameters such as growth temperature, annealing temperature, and solution concentration not changing. Other experimental parameters such as seeding layers and growth durations varied throughout. The morphology and microstructures of the zinc oxide nanowires synthesized are investigated with the use of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the transmission percentages are examined with the use of ultraviolet and visible light spectrometer as well as the surface roughness is measured with the use of atomic force microscopy. Electrical conductivity measurements were taken to assess the quality of the substrates and their possible use in applications. Between the growth conditions and parameters and the growth of the zinc oxide nanowires, this thesis presented a strong correlation in terms of the different results achieved.
