Censorship practices in Julio-Claudian period Roman literary

In this thesis, we will examine the situation of free speech and how the tradition of censorship developed during the Julio-Claudian Period, the first dynasty of the Roman Empire, with its effects before Principate and after the end of the dynasty. This review includes the origin of censorship in Rome, the laws that caused censorship, the influence of Roman politics on literature with freedom of expression and the writers of Roman literature who were punished for political reasons. In this context, we will consider the punishments in Rome such as exile, death, book-burning or censorship applied to their works, and self-censorship applied by some authors to their writings, who have taken an opposing stance and write insulting words against an aristocrat close to the Emperor or Emperor himself. In this way, this study aims to examine the common assumptions about censorship and freedom or lack of expression in the early Roman Empire.
