Impression management tactics and a scale development study in the context of Turkey

Abstract (EN)

Scientific research on Organizational Behavior is generally used of scales developed in different countries, and most of the time ignored the effects of social culture in individuals' attitudes and behaviors. In particular, behaviors that direct the perceptions of the other person, such as impression management tactics, can be influenced by the cultural characteristics of individuals. In this context, it is aimed to explore the impression management tactics specific to the Turkish working environment and to develop that a valid and reliable impression management scale compatible with the Turkish culture. In this study, which is benefiting on the main sources of scale development and the scale development studies in the literature was used a three-stage method that consisting of constructing the item pool, constructing of the scale and evaluating of the scale. In this context, it was conducted that semi-structured interview with 60 participants. It was created a substance pool based the code and themes that obtained by the expert assessments and was tested that the content validity of the scale. As a result of the substance elimination was completed with 16 items the last version of the scale. It was performed exploratory factor analysis (n = 490) and was seen 4 dimensional structure and was explained 69.2% of total variance. The reliability coefficients of scale is 0.88. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, it was seen that first level model, which was recommended for impression management, had the best good of fitnesses. Within the frame of construct validity, it was seen that the scale provided divergent validity with ocb scale. The results showed that the developed impression management scale was a reliable and valid scale. Keywords: Impression Management, Social Culture, Scale Development
