Psychosocial factors among İzmir Konak Municipality cleaning services section workers and their effects on work accidents

Objectives: With this study investigation of the relationship between psychosocial factors among Izmir Konak Municipality Cleaning Services Section workers and work accidents is aimed.Methods: In this cross-sectional research, 189 workers listed as permanent of Izmir Konak Municipality Cleaning Services Section were evaluated as population. The access to all of workers was targeted but 137 (%73.0) workers accepted to participate in this research. Face-to-face interviews were implementated and the questionnaire used for data collecting. Dependent variable is work-related accident occured in the last six months. Independent variables are sociodemographic properties, working conditions, health status of the workers and psychosocial factors. Job stres, one of the psychosocial factors, includes workload and social support was evaluated with the scale which was developed according to the Karasek?s working burden&control&social support model. Mental health status was evaluated with the General Health Questionnaire including twelve questions. General sleepiness status was evaluated with Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Statistical analysis of data were conducted with the chi-square test and the logistic regression. SPSS 11.00 computer programme used for statistical analysis.Results: The mean age of the participant workers was 46.9 ± 4.8. The 67.2% of participants were working as waste collection workers and the rest of them were working as truck driver. It was determined that 32.6% of the waste collection workers and 11.1% of truck drivers have experienced at least one work-related accident in the last six months (OR=4.62; %95GA: 1.45-14.80).Conclusion: Jjob definition significantly effect work-related accidents among municipal cleaning workers.Key words: Psychosocial factors, work-related accident, workload, social support.
