The classification of the sciences according to İzmirli İsmail Hakkı

This paper examines İzmirli İsmail Hakkı's understanding of the classification of the sciences which he put forward on the basis of his opinions on miscellaneous science classifications based on İslamic Philosophy. Science tradition and modern philosophy-science idea-the purpose of this study is to find answers to the questions of why İzmirli took a close interest in a modern science classifications, which classification he took as a model what approaches in İslamic sciences classification systems he adopted whether he developed an original classification of sciences, what role he played in the history of science classification and what he contributed to the classification studies. To that end, İzmirli's works where he evaluated the classification of sciences have been examined and analyzed in a comparative argumentative way. Further explanations were also presented on the effects of the historical and periodical conditions on İzmirli's understanding of the classification. The scope of this paper has been determined through İzmirli's remarks about the classification of sciences. However, the principal dynamics, main features and certain problems of western and eastern philosophies were also included in terms of their influences on the related consider-ations. Besides, İzmirli's criticism of conventional and modern classification of sciences on the basis of "method" research was put forward in an analytical perspective. On the other hand, the science classifications examined by İzmirli and his own science classification were compared. Finally, arguments on what kind of a classification system was developed by İzmirli, who had a broad knowledge and valuable works in the history of science classification, were presented.
