Job satisfaction among construction workers and civil engineers in Gaza Strip

Job satisfaction is considered to have an important role in increasing productivity, and it is a factor in the success, development and achievement of the goals of any organization. It is believed that time and cost problems in construction projects are somehow related to employee job satisfaction and that employees who are satisfied with their jobs are more productive than their dissatisfied counterparts. In this thesis, it was aimed to determine the level of job satisfaction among civil engineers and construction workers in Gaza strip. The instrument used to assess job satisfaction was a new job satisfaction questionnaire that consists of 48 questions from 13 facets of job satisfaction. It's developed by adding some necessary questions to an existent questionnaire based on Spector's Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). Using a 5-point Likert-type format, responses ranged from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The Statistical Program for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 for Windows was used for the statistical analysis of data collected via the satisfaction survey from 300 civil engineers and construction workers. Results of the study indicate that according to the thirteen job dimensions, employees were dissatisfied with seven aspects of their jobs (pay, promotions, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, operating conditions, job security and working conditions), satisfied with five aspects (supervision, co-workers, nature of work, autonomy and communication) and in terms of (growth/development) factor, they indicated that they did not know the answer to the questions or had no idea. The findings of job satisfaction relationship testing with each demographic variable concluded that the demographic variables had a statistically significant influence on the level of job satisfaction of some job fields, while had no effect on others. Finally, the management of construction firms should follow policies and methods of implementation which are proportional to the engineers' characteristics and needs. They should also concentrate on enhancing job facets and designing appropriate programs to provide better working conditions for the employees. This will raise the level of job satisfaction and improve productivity.
