Body, space and movement

My thesis investigates gendered perceptions of space and codes of spatial behaviour by way of women's bodies. In examining gender-based behavior within a space, it aims to explore how social, cultural, economic, and political changes influence and transform these behaviors. Furthermore, it explores space and space-contingent movement formations which arise from fictionalized roles. This study analyzes the movement patterns in pre-determined public spaces of women who come from different socio-cultural segments, ages, and class backgrounds, and yet are all subject at some level to a system of patriarchal social relations. Towards this end, the women participating in the study were asked to perform various actions related to everyday life in places such as streets, avenues, underpasses, and touristic areas in order to observe how their social and class status affects their movements.
