Effects of women's employment on economic growth: Turkey-OECD countries 1995-2018 periods comparison

Abstract (EN)

This study examines the relationship between women's employment and economic growth. In order for a country to achieve sustainable economic growth, its must always sustain its labor market. One of the important ways to keep the labor market afloat is women. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the details of womens employment. Here, the factors affecting women' employment, the barries they face in women's participation in the labor market, and the recomendations are mentioned. In the first part of the study, the concept of economic growth, growht teories the concept types of unemployment, the concept of employment and factors affecting employment are mentioned. In the second part, the relationship between economic growth and women's employment in Turkey and OECD countries with data obtained from OECD, TUIK and ILO is graphically explained. In the last chapter, an econometric analysis was performed based on the first two chapters and the results obtained were interpreted. Using the annual series fort he period 1995-2018, we are dependent on economic growth so GDP, our independent variables are women's Employment, women's Unemployment, female workforce participation, age and education variables. Horizontal cross-section dependency test and homogeneity test were aplied to measure the statis levels of the variables, and since the study had horizontal section dependency for analysis continued with second generaiton cordination test. As a result of panel data analysis, there is a positive and meaningful relationship between economic growth and women's employment, unemployment and labor force participation. The variables used in the model were examined individually. Hypotheses female unemployment as a result of women's employment, women's age and a negative correlation between female labor force participation and GDP found a positive correlation between women's education. There is a coordination relationship between women's employment and participation on the workforce and GDP. It has been concluded that there is a no coordination relationship between female unemployment and GDP.
