Abstract (EN)
This research aims to analyze news about violence against women in the Turkish media using Galtung and Ruge's news value criteria and to examine how these news items differ between traditional media and internet journalism. The study analyzes news related to the murders of Emine Bulut, Pınar Gültekin, Azra Gülendam Haytaoğlu, and Münevver Karabulut, published in media outlets with different ideological perspectives such as Yeni Şafak, Sözcü, Haber7, and T24. The purpose of the study is to assess how news about violence against women is addressed in traditional and digital media channels, evaluating differences in the use of language, visual content, headlines, the degree of personalization, and the emphasis on violence. The study also examines how internet journalism differs from traditional media in terms of audience interaction, the emotional dimensions of news, and the dramatization of violent events. The findings suggest that traditional media outlets use more formal and objective language in reporting violence against women, often framing the events through legal developments. In contrast, internet journalism tends to present these events more dramatically, emphasizing elements that evoke emotional reactions from the audience. Digital media, in an effort to increase reader engagement, often use more sensational headlines and emphasize violence, whereas traditional media place more emphasis on the societal aspects and resolution processes of the events. This study highlights the role of the media in raising public awareness about violence against women and underscores the importance of ethically responsible reporting within the boundaries of journalistic ethics. By assessing the societal impacts of the differences between traditional and digital media, the study offers recommendations to make news coverage more balanced and empathetic.
