Abstract (EN)

The work titled Kâmûsü'l-a'lâm, written by Shemseddin Sâmi, was created by taking Bouillet's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire et de Geographie and many such works as an example. The work, which was printed in 6 volumes in Mihran Printing House and consisted of 4830 pages in total, includes the biographies of many people including prophets, caliphs, Companions, scholars, poets and poets. In this respect, the work, which has a biographical identity as well as information on history and geography, does not contain religious, scientific, historical terms and idioms since it was prepared as a dictionary of proper names. In this study, it is aimed to bring the work to the literature by preparing the transcribed text together with the analysis of this work, which can be a source for many fields. Pages 1-75 of the first volume of Kâmûsü'l-a'lâm, which was published in fascicles every fifteen days between 1889-1899 and completed in more than 10 years and has a volume of 6 volumes, constitute the scope of this study. In the Introduction section of the study, the encyclopaedia genre, which is one of the sources of classical Turkish literature and in which Kâmûsü'l-a'lâm is also included, is discussed. Under the title of Chapters, Shemseddin Sâmi's life, literary personality and works are given, the form and content features of Kâmûsü'l-a'lâm are revealed and finally the transcribed text of pages 1-75 of volume 1 of Kâmûsü'l-a'lâm is given.
