Turkish adaptation of comprehensive aphasia test (CAT-TR): Study of imageability, familiarity, AGE of acquisition and name agreement

The concern about whether the existing aphasia batteries in the literature can completely fulfill its assessment function or not has led to the need of developing and using other measuring instruments investigating the effect of brain damages on communication and language functions. As a result, CAT has come to the fore being selected as a uniform assessment tool expected to be shared among countries. In this study, which aims to determine the words in Language Battery Section of CAT according to the predictors: imageability, familiarity, age of acquisition and name agreement, 71 participants have been involved in imageability, familiarity, age of acquisition tasks for 236 words and 40 participants have been involved in name agreement task for 244 picture. Imageability, familiarity, age of acquisition and name agreement (percentage and H statistic) rating scores have been found and the correlations between these predictors have been analyzed with Spearman's rho test. As a result of these analyses it has been observed that when imageability score increases, familiarity score also increases; on the other hand when AoA score increases both imageability and familiarity scores decrease. That is to say, words learned earlier, create images in the mind more easily and are more familiar than words learned later. It has been determined that when name agreement (%) score increases, imageability score also increases; nevertheless AoA score decreases. Accordingly, name agreement score is higher among participants in naming the pictures of more imageable and familiar words than the others. Thus, it has been decided that these words are learned earlier. The correlation between name agreement (percentage and H statistics) analyses is negative; the higher the percentage among participants, the lower H score is.
