Tumuli of the Black Sea Region

Tumuli are the type of tombs that give the appearance of artificial hills covered with rubble stones and earth. Tumuli appear in various parts of the world but do not have cultural and chronological connections with each other. This type of tomb, which is common in the Balkans, came from here to the Thrakia Region in the Turkish Geography and spread to the northern part of the Black Sea Region. The tumuli in the Black Sea Region are divided into the Bithynia Region, Paphlagonia Region and Pontos Region tumuli. The tumuli found were evaluated in terms of architecture and findings, and they were dated accordingly. Some tumuli have only been surveyed and registered. The earliest examples of the tumuli found in the Black Sea Region were dated to the Iron Age. There are also examples dated to the Achaemenid Period, Hellenistic Period and Roman Periods. Since some of the tumulus tombs were heavily damaged and no findings were made, they could not be dated. In this study, a total of 68 tumuli, 1 stela, 1 relief block were investigated, and information was given about the destruction status, whether excavations were carried out or not, and the period in which they were dated.
