Forensic medical evaluation of the cases who applied to the emergency department of Karadeniz Technical University due to occupational accidents in 2020-2021

1. Introduction and Objective: Occupational accidents are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in our country as well as all over the world. When occupational accidents occur most frequently, age ranges, accident and injury types, it is seen that there are important statistics that will help reduce accidents. In our study; Cases who applied to the Emergency Service of KTU Faculty of Medicine between 2020-2021 were examined in terms of age, gender, occupation, time of the accident, type of accident, type of injury, whether the injury could be remedied with simple medical intervention and whether it caused a life-threatening accident. It is aimed to raise awareness about injuries resulting from injuries. 2. Materials and Methods: The structure of the study is a cross-sectional descriptive study, and the files of the cases who applied to the Emergency Service of KTU Medical Faculty in 2020-2021 and were injured as a result of work accident were examined retrospectively in electronic environment. 3. Results: When the genders of the cases injured due to work accidents were examined, it was observed that 92.9% (n:843) were male and 7.1% (n:64) were female, and the accidents were mostly in the 21-40 age group (60,1%, n=545) and the mean age was found to be 35.02±11.09. When the sectors in which occupational accidents occur are examined it is seen that the accidents occur most frequently in the construction sector. 4. Conclusion: Occupational accidents, which are one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality, are seen in the most productive age range of life and cause great damage to the country's economy by causing great labor losses. In order to minimize the loss resulting from occupational accidents, awareness of employees on this issue should be increased, necessary training and inspections should be carried out regularly, and technical opportunities should be improved to prevent accidents.
