Abstract (EN)
Transoxiana, located on the historic Silk Road, has been a crossroads of many different cultures and nations throughout history. Due to its location on trade routes and its underground wealth, Transoxiana was invaded by many states. Therefore, the region has various names. Transoxiana covers an area of 660,000 square kilometers between the Jaxartes (Amu Darya) and Oxus (Syr Darya) rivers. The Qara Khitai State (1124-1218) seized Transoxiana before the rise of the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan and ruled in Turkistan for approximately ninety years. The Qara Khitai was founded by Khitan refugees led by Yelü Dashi, who fled from Northern China after their ancestors, the Khitan Dynasty (907-1125), were destroyed by the Jurchens (1115-1234). The Qara Khitai quickly established a multicultural empire in Turkistan, bringing together Chinese, nomadic, and Muslim elements. The Qara Khitai Empire, which defeated the Karakhanids and Seljuks and made the Khwarazmians, Uyghurs, and various Mongol tribes their vassals, controlled a vast territory at its peak, from the Jaxartes River to the Altai Mountains, encompassing much of Uzbekistan to Western Mongolia and parts of China's Eastern Turkistan region. Their greatest victory, the Battle of Qatwan in 1141 against the Seljuks, even laid the foundation for the legend of Prester John. The Qara Khitai ruled the empire with religious tolerance, managing their Chinese, nomadic, and predominantly Muslim settled populations harmoniously without significantly interfering with local rulers. However, the weakening dynasty lost its former power due to the rise of the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan and the increasing strength of the Khwarazmians. In the early thirteenth century, the throne of the Qara Khitai was usurped by Nayman Küchlüg Khan, who fled from Genghis Khan. With Küchlüg's death at the hands of the Mongols, the Qara Khitai disappeared from the historical stage. The Mongols incorporated most of the Qara Khitai forces into their own army and directed their skilled subjects for the needs of the empire. A branch of the Qara Khitai established the Kirman Qara Khitai under Mongol and later Ilkhanid suzerainty.
