Examining career counseling competencies within the scope of career counseling practice course: A case study

The aim of this study is to examine the practices and supervision processes related to the Career Counseling Practice Course in fostering career counseling self-efficacy and to offer recommendations regarding the course. This research employed an embedded single-case study design, in which the Career Counseling Practice Course was identified as the unit of analysis, while supervisees receiving career counseling supervision, supervisors, and field experts were designated as sub-units of analysis. The participants of the study consisted of supervisees, supervisors, and field experts. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Open-Ended Questionnaire, Career Counseling Self-Efficacy Checklist, and Semi-Structured Interview Form. The findings revealed that providing regular feedback and implementing structured supervision practices supported the development of supervisees' career counseling self-efficacy. The integration of various instructional methods was found to enhance the retention of learning and contribute to the formation of positive attitudes toward career counseling. Furthermore, large class sizes, limited resources, and a lack of public awareness about career counseling emerged as primary factors constraining the effectiveness of the process. It was also observed that sustaining professional development after graduation requires improved access to up-to-date information and systematic support for developing analytical skills. In light of the findings, several recommendations were proposed regarding course planning, the enhancement of implementation processes, the strengthening of supervision practices, and the promotion of career opportunities.
