Abstract (EN)

In this study, I dealt with Robert B. Shaw?s dictionary -A Sketch of the Turki Language as spoken in Eastern Turkistan (Kashghar and Yarkand) (Calcutta, 1880)- which is accepted as the first Modern Uyghur dictionary. Firstly, English equivalent of the Modern Uyghur entries were translated into Turkish. In this way, it is aimed to make prevalent the use of this significant Modern Uyghur dictionary in the Turcological studies in Turkey. Moreover, in order to see some changes on word level between the late XIX. century Uyghur literary language and contemporary Uyghur literary language, the Modern Uyghur entries of Shaw?s dictionary with the entries of Uygur Tiliniñ zahlik Lugiti (1999) / Explanatory Dictionary of Modern Uyghur were compared. Lastly, etymological explanations about the Modern Uyghur words were given. A Sketch of the Turki Language as Spoken in Eastern Turkistan (Kashghar and Yarkand) (1880) is not just a dictionary -in the classical sense- which gives short explanations of the entries. It also gives encyclopedic information which throws a light on historical, etnografical and cultural aspects of Kashghar and Yarkand. Namely, this dictionary does not only give linguistic data. Shaw sometimes analyses Modern Uyghur entries and makes etymological explanations. This shows that he is in no distance from Turcology. Especially competence of his linguistic book on Modern Uyhur which he sometimes gives references from is a proof for this situation. We try to bring a light to this significant work by studying as a master thesis. Keywords : Modern Uyghur, Kashghar, Yarkand, Etymology, Robert Barkley Shaw, Dialect Dictionary.
